The York Ghost Signs Project

Bob Trotter

Address: 13 Lord Mayor’s Walk, YO31 7HB (on the rear wall, so only visible from the City Walls)

Description

A ghost sign affixed to the back wall of a building advertises “Cycle Hire” along with a contact number “Tel: 622868.”

It also bears the name “Bob Trotter” and features a bold red border against a white background.

History

Bob Trotter Cycles, York’s oldest bike shop, first opened its doors on Monkgate in 1955.

In 2011, it evolved into Giant Store York, though it remained under the ownership of the Trotter family.

Today, the business is led by Bob Trotter’s grandchildren, Nicola and David Trotter, operating from two locations: Giant York on Lord Mayor’s Walk and Liv Store York, a women-specific branch established in 2008 by chairwoman Bonnie Tu.

The ghost sign is affixed to the rear of the building, facing the city walls—an ideal spot for advertising due to the high foot traffic along the walls.

This ghost sign was attached after 1982, the year when York phone numbers expanded from five to six digits.

This strategic placement has ensured that the sign remains a prominent feature in the landscape.

Now, despite the name change to Giant Store York, the shop’s legacy continues with the same family passion for cycling that began over six decades ago.
