History

North Street became known for its riverside warehouses and yards.

In the early 1700s, a steam flour and grain mill was built on the street, and in 1788, a private staith was constructed to improve river access.

Since the late 1990s, the City of York Council occupied the Mill House, but by then it needed some care and attention.

The refurbishment project added modern features like air-conditioning, open-plan offices, a reception area, and a lift, along with new kitchens and toilets.

In 2014, Mill House became the new base for North Yorkshire Police. The police signed a 30-year lease for 4,000 sq. ft. of office space on the ground floor, so will continue to reside there for a while.
