The York Ghost Signs Project

Oxtoby

Address: 16 Fishergate, York, YO10 4AB

Description

Multiple wooden signs on a building front display the words ‘TM Oxtoby & Son Painters Paperhangers Decorators.’

The letters, crafted in metallic gold, contrast against the olive green backdrop.

History

This building in central York, once a decorator’s shop in Fishergate, has a Grade II listed frontage, earning its protected status in March 1997.

The shop was part of a popular family business and was most recently run by Rodney Oxtoby. He managed the decorating supplies business for 42 years before retiring. The business was set up by his grandfather.

The business was established by Rodney’s grandfather and operated for over a century, until it closed in the 1990s after being sold.

The building has since been converted into flats above and a hairdresser on the ground floor, but the name “TM Oxtoby & Son” is still visible above the entrance – a reminder of the shop’s long history in York.
