History
Step into the world of John Wilfred Rieveley, a notable corn and seed merchant of York, whose passion extended beyond the grains and into the hearts of pet lovers, dedicating a special corner of his shop to our furry and feathered friends.
Nestled on Colliergate, with a sister shop on Hungate, his establishment was more than just a business; it was a local landmark.
The building itself tells a tale of transformation and endurance. Originally built in 1748 as a house, the building underwent significant modifications around 1830.
Further changes in the 20th century added a new shopfront, blending its historical architecture with modern commerce.
John Rieveley’s life spanned from 1889 to 1953, rooted in a lineage of traders. His father, Warcup Rieveley, was a flour dealer at 101 High Petergate until his passing in 1871.
Interestingly, an old receipt reveals John also dealt in flour, continuing the family tradition in a sweet nod to his heritage.
