Address: 51 Cygnet St, York, YO23 1AQ
Description
Attached to a residential building, there’s a wooden ghost sign that says “St Clement’s Church House.”
The black text, set against a white background, is heavily weathered, with chunks of paint peeling off.
History
The church hall, designed by James Rutherford of Brierley & Rutherford in 1933, was the work of York’s top architectural firm of the era.
The ghost sign you’re seeing shows the back of the church hall, which people used to be able to enter from. The main entrance is on Nunthorpe Road, and it is still in use today.
The building and its sign underwent restoration in August 2014 and now functions as a self-funded community center.
It hosts a variety of activities like craft classes, local history meetings, and health and fitness groups, among others.
