Description
Carved into a stone panel on a residential building, you’ll find the words “St Margaret’s Parish” etched above the doorway, framed by a fine-lined border.
History
This row of houses was built in 1845 and is associated with St Margaret’s Church, located on Walmgate, just a street over.
St Margaret’s Church is a Grade I listed former Church of England parish church in York, with roots dating back to the 12th century.
The only surviving structure from that period is the south porch, while the nave dates to the 14th century and the vestry to the 15th century. The tower was reconstructed between 1684 and 1685.
In the mid-19th century, from 1851 to 1852, Thomas Pickersgill restored the church, incorporating stained glass designed by J. W. Knowles of York, whose ghost sign can still be found on Stonegate.
Since 2000, the church has been home to the National Centre for Early Music.
27 George Street, part of the terrace built in 1845, has now been transformed into a rentable holiday home.
