The York Ghost Signs Project

Victory

Address: End of Nelson Street, York, YO31 8NJ

Description

On D-Day in 1944, Muriel Feasby and Peter Lyons, two residents of Nelson Street, boldly painted the word ‘VICTORY’ along with ‘HITLER’ next to a hangman’s noose in white paint on a wall at the end of their street.

Today, only the last three letters, ‘ORY’, of ‘VICTORY’ remain visible.

History

Linda Powell shared with us the origins of this ghost sign in a comment on our website:

The sign dates back to D-Day, 6 June 1944, marking the Allied invasion of Normandy, the largest seaborne invasion in history.

Known as Operation Neptune and part of Operation Overlord, this critical day began the liberation of France and Western Europe, paving the way for the Allied victory in the Second World War.
