W&H

Address: 4 The Stonebow, York, YO1 7NY (now Cat in the Wall)

Description

A ghost sign on the Stonebow features the letters ‘W&H’ in white against a pitch black background, offering a glimpse into York’s past.

History

The ‘W&H’ stands for ‘Woollons & Harwood’, a general, jack-of-all-trades, houseware hardware store.

Founded by George Woollons in York in 1901, it went into partnership with Mr. Harwood in 1926 and became a limited company.

With headquarters in Malton and shops operating for about 40 years across North Yorkshire, all stores closed in 2013.

The Stonebow location in York closed in the late 1970s, later transforming into a music shop known as Gough & Davy.
