The York Ghost Signs Project

Woodbine Cigarettes

Address: 1a Gerard Ave, Tang Hall, York, YO31 0QT (above Jo Jo’s Place)

Description

A ghost sign on the second floor of a shopfront displays the words “Woodbine Cigarettes” with an illustration of a slender cigarette in the background.

History

Woodbine Cigarettes were introduced in 1888 by W.D. & H.O. Wills (much like another cigarette ghost sign in York), were known for their strong, unfiltered makeup.

This made Woodbines a cost-effective choice popular among the working class and military personnel during both World Wars.

1930s Woodbine packaging

The brand retained its ornate nineteenth-century packet design until the mid-1960s, even though the packaging was later modernised.

Despite the updates, Woodbines sales declined over time.

These cigarettes, often referred to as “gaspers” until around 1950, were notorious for their harsh smoke that proved challenging for new smokers to inhale.

Interestingly, ghost signs advertising Woodbine, like this Woodbine advert on Gerard Ave, and this one,  are among the few remaining forms of cigarette advertising.

TV advertisements were prohibited by the Broadcasting Act of 1990, and poster and billboard advertising was banned in 2002 by the Tobacco Advertising and Promotion Act.

Tang Hall

Tang Hall’s development began in 1921, aligning with a national effort to provide affordable housing for workers.

By February 1921, the first homes on Carter Avenue were ready, with construction progressing on 4th and 8th Avenues.

This initiative came after the clearance of the Walmgate and Hungate slums, which relocated many  workers and their families to Tang Hall – this marked their first experience of quality living conditions.
