Review of Circe by Madeleine Miller

Circe is held up against a backdrop of an old building on campus. It is a hardback book with gold and black vines and flowers on the cover.

One of our personal favourites from Lucy’s recommendations for retellings of Greek myth , Circe is a captivating retelling of Homer’s Odyssey that tells the story of how Circe transforms a woman into a sea monster and is banished to live in solitude on an island. Once there, she teaches herself to use herbs and flowers to brew potions to help her harness her power and she becomes renowned for her witchcraft. It is a beautifully defiant story about finding yourself and feeling at home on this Earth in the face of the dangers of being different. I think this might be one of the prettiest cover-designs I’ve seen, so I had big expectations for this novel which it really did exceed.
