My Experience as a Student Voice Ambassador
For the last 8 months, I have been working as a Student Voice Ambassador at York St John University. This has been my experience!
What does a Student Voice Ambassador do?
The main responsibility of a Student Voice Ambassador is to create authentic and insightful content discussing student life. Through blogs, vlogs, and other social media content, we show viewers what being a student at York St John is truly like! I’ve produced content talking about the City of York, student lifestyle, and the amazing services offered to YSJ students. I am so glad to have offered this guidance to others during their university journey.
What skills & experience have I gained as a Student Voice Ambassador?
During my time as a Student Voice Ambassador, I have produced a huge portfolio of creative content like blogs and short form videos. Through the development of this content, I have expanded my writing, researching, and video production skills, as well as my more mindful skills like creativity, storytelling, and dedication. The team will often provide content briefs, but they are also open to hearing my own brief ideas! This opportunity has given me the chance to explore my own inspirations and publish narratives that are important to me. Being a Student Voice Ambassador has helped me exercise transferable skills which I can use in my future career!
How have I balanced being a Student Voice Ambassador around my studies?
Student Voice Ambassador is a casual position, meaning the hours I work are flexible! For example, some months I’ll be available to take on two or three content briefs, while other months I might not take any. The team acknowledges that our studies take priority and are very considerate on the months when we need to focus on exams, deadlines, or studying. It’s because of this that I’ve had minimal issue with balancing my studying and working lives. I’ve honestly thoroughly enjoyed producing content for this role and finding time to do things you enjoy is always easy.
How has being a Student Voice Ambassador supported me financially?
All Student Voice Ambassadors are paid in line with the real living wage and the number of hours you work is dependent on the quantity of briefs you complete that month. It’s a great way to make some extra money to put towards amenities like bills, groceries, or just treating yourself to something fun! I tend to spilt this income between groceries and a fun treat, usually a takeout or a ticket to whatever fun event is happening in York that month.
What’s been the most enjoyable part of being a Student Voice Ambassador?
The most enjoyable part of being a Student Voice Ambassador is having the platform to share my knowledge, wisdoms, and passions with others in the YSJ community. I’ve produced content relating to such important subjects like Pride, mental health, and the incredible student services offered at York St John. These services have granted me so many opportunities like employment, project funding, and personal support. Knowing the content I’ve created may have guided another student to reach out to these services is absolutely heart warming, if I’ve influenced at least one of you then I would say that’s a job well done!
