Gendered encounters in a postfeminist context: researcher identity work in interviews with men and women leaders in the City of London
This seminar explores researcher identity work as one aspect of the research relationship when interviewing men and women elite respondents. Scholarly considerations of relationships in interviews tend to focus on the vulnerability of the interview subject, arguing that irrespective of interview topic or interviewee, the power dynamic tends to act in favour of the researcher. Elite interviews are often treated as the exception to this claim as it is argued that they have a different power dynamic, with the interviewer in a weaker position compared to their more powerful respondents. Similarly, considerations of cross[1]gender interviewing where women interview men are also understood as sites where a reversal in the power dynamic between researcher and researched occurs. In general, there is a tendency to view power relations within interview settings as a zero-sum game – one party controls the interaction at the expense of the other. However, despite this claim, there is increasing recognition that interview situations are not characterised by static power lines. Starting from this latter position, the seminar will argue that it is more fruitful to interpret the power embedded in interview interactions as fluid, dynamic and contested with the power dynamic continually moving between the interviewer and interviewee. A key aim of the seminar will be to explore how to manage a constantly moving power dynamic within an interview context.

The Practices of Ethnography in Business and Management Studies, hosted by NARTI and the University of York on Monday 5th June.
At this event, we will be hosting four panels to discuss major themes in contemporary ethnography in business and management studies and the importance of remaking the practices of ethnography to meet their demands. Our chosen themes build on the work of recently published ethnographies on post-humanism, occupational culture, sustainability, and organization studies.
The aim is to develop a shared discussion that informs research students and early career researchers about challenges that ethnographers face when doing ethnography.
Please read the attached event flyer carefully, noting the programme timings. If you are offered a place, you will be expected to arrive in good time to avoid disruption.
The event is open and free to attend but we have a limited number of seats available so please only register if you are fully able to commit to attending. Please register to secure your attendance by 12 May 2023 at https://forms.office.com/e/jX1V516W5P.

WriteHere, RightNow is a unique opportunity to get some writing done with the support of colleagues and live coaching with Will Medd to help you generate a sustainable, productive writing habit in balance with the rest of life.
Course objectives:
Like so many things we have to do, writing for your research is one of those things we rarely feel satisfied with. We come up with all sorts of distractions. Convince ourselves we need to read more. Fear wasting time going down the wrong track. Worry we’re not doing justice to the complexity of the ideas we’re grappling with. It can all get so heavy, so much is at stake. Rarely do we feel satisfied; like we’ve done a good days work!
WriteHere, RightNow offers a combination of ‘retreat’ to create space to write and live coaching ‘experiments’ to explore different approaches to the experience of writing.
Focusing on a particular piece of writing, in a playful way we’ll explore what happens to our writing when we ask what our writing agenda is (What’s really at stake in this piece of work? What is the goal?), how we get in our own way (What pressure and fears are you creating?), how we might write from different experiences (What perspectives might be helpful?) and what might be worth giving a go (What are the options for playing with here?).
The retreat will include identifying new writing habits that you can start putting into practice so come prepared to try out and experiment with different approaches to your writing experience. With fun and frustration all thrown into the mix you will leave with some clarity about what works for you.
Outcomes:
Participants will come away with:
- Dedicated writing time on their topics.
- Greater awareness of what gets in their way of their writing and how to overcome that.
- Insight from colleagues about their writing experiences and strategies.
- A commitment to new writing habits.
Participants will need:
- a laptop or something else to write on (we will be writing a lot during the course)
- to have something you are currently writing with you (chapter, article, analysis, conference paper)
- to be curious, open minded about your writing, and be willing to explore different ways of changing the experience.
- to be on time! It makes a huge difference if we kick off to a good start
NOTE: this workshop will not involve assessment of your writing or engage with writing style, grammar or English. It is about the experience of writing and finding ways to work effectively.
To register, please do so via the following link: https://forms.office.com/e/ddxLiFxggf. Please only register if you are able to commit to attending. Priority will be given to those who are able to participate in all four days.
Zoom details will be sent in due course.
Wednesday 7th June 2023 (10.00-16.00)
Summary
This workshop covers definitions, purposes, criteria, examiners’ reports, roles and responsibilities, ‘originality’, outcomes and appeals. Two key topics we will look at in depth are (1) the types of questions that regularly come up in PhD vivas and (2) strategies for constructing good answers to questions in doctoral examinations. This workshop includes short activities to practise these strategies and time to consider their relevance for your viva. Finally, throughout this workshop I address participants’ questions about the viva, and I will be available after the workshop to discuss by email/Zoom any questions that are not answered during this workshop.
