The PhD mental health crisis has only been exacerbated by the pandemic with approximately 1 in 2 PhD students experiencing mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, and 80% of researchers showing signs of mental health distress during the pandemic. This talk will discuss managing mental health during the PhD process, including the statistics behind PhD mental health, common stressors you may face as a PhD student, and some tips and tricks to manage them along the way. This is a mental health talk with a difference – we will explore systemic issues in academia, which is so often not acknowledged.
This event will take place online via Microsoft Teams on June 27th from 12-1pm. To book a place visit here: Managing your mental health during your PhD

Have you got a piece of writing that you’re “meant” to be doing but feel that you’re not making enough progress? That you “should” have done it by now? Or that you don’t know where to start or even if it’s any good anyway? We all knew we were going to have to write papers when we got into academia but it can be really hard to get going and maintain that effort when it feels difficult or we think we’re too busy with other things. You’ll probably have seen lots of workshops and tips online about writing every day or blocking out whole days to write. Maybe you’ve tried them for a while but it’s not worked.
In this two hour online workshop, we’ll focus on WHY you’re not writing at the moment and how we can manage our thoughts and feelings to get more done and enjoy the process. I’ll help you identify the specific thoughts that are holding you back and figure out why it’s totally understandable that you’re finding it hard at the moment. From that place of compassion and curiosity, we’ll plan a way forward. I’ll teach you some specific self-coaching techniques that you can use when you’re struggling to write. You’ll leave knowing how to support yourself to get this done and be proud of the outcome. This session will take place via Zoom. Details of how to join will be sent out to all attendees closer to the event.

This free day of online talks facilitated by Queen's University Belfast will explore life after PGR study for those with a PhD in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Graduate students, postdocs, early (and not so early!) career scholars and interested parties are all very welcome to join. These talks will be especially useful to those working within the UK and Ireland, but we hope there will be material of relevance to scholars from elsewhere in the world, too.
The talks will cover a variety of topics, including the skills needed to navigate post-PhD life in academia and careers beyond the university; we will also be joined by a representative from the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Director of the Leverhulme Trust, Professor Anna Vignoles. Please click here to book your free place via Eventbrite.
The day will conclude with an ‘Engaged Research Masterclass’, which will appeal to students and academics at all stages of their careers. *Please note that registration for the ‘Engaged Research Masterclass’ is separate and can be booked here via Eventbrite.
We are inviting expressions of interest in a one day ‘Race’ and Socially Engaged Research: Postgraduate and Early Careers’ conference that will take place in early September 2023 (12th/13th/14th - date TBC). This postgraduate-led interdisciplinary conference aims to provide an interactive and supportive space for postgraduate and early career social science researchers to present their research and network with peers across the country. The conference is led by a collaborative group of PhD students from the University of York and York St John University.
