Social innovation at YSJ: creating a database
Project Leads: Ann Christie and Mike Calvert
Student as Researchers: Zoe Buckton, Tracey Dillion
Social Innovation is a continuing aspect here at YSJ. We have internal work (like Converge) and partnerships outside of the university. There is a concern that activities in and around the university are not being recognised and celebrated as they should be, and not all opportunities for teamwork are taken. This project wanted to capture all the work in a database and make it accessible to any one; it would also make it easier to audit the impact as an institution.
Two researchers were hired and have since gathered a whole range of information on the social innovation activities taking place here at YSJ. They compiled it onto this site. In addition, they were also able to conduct case studies and write short summaries so the audience could gain more information. The students also set up a dedicated e-mail address so it could be monitored easier.
This was a successful project and proved useful to the students outside their role as student researcher, they were able to fit it into their busy schedules and use the transferable skills outside of the role. For example, one of the student researchers is interested in journalism, and she was able to develop these skills through her time working on this project.
