(3MD002) Magazine blog post 1

Week 1 This was the introduction to both the module and the tasks that we would be expected to carry out in order to complete it, including the deadline for the production of a "Yorkie" magazine. During the lecture and subsequent SOL time, the group looked at how the magazine industry is split by types of publication; consumer, customer, business to business and niche. We then individually analysed a magazine and shared our thoughts, this helped to look at how a number of different publications are put together and get a grasp of what our own magazine has the potential to look like.  As well as this there was a re-visiting of and evaluation of feature introduction writing, the task involved splitting into pairs and re-writing a story introduction in a new style. In my group we looked at creating a shocking effect, from an article covering a tragic story about an accident at a major US holiday park: "264 steps, 168 feet...

Drastic change to Scartho fork roundabout

Drastic change to Scartho fork roundabout

Scartho village's iconic cherry tree that has stood at the Scartho fork roundabout for 50 years was replaced this Christmas, with mixed responses to its necessary removal. It was discovered that the tree, which has lit up the village each year with its christmas lights, was riddled with a fungal disease. Following this discovery, North East Lincolnshire Council announced that the tree posed a risk to traffic and pedestrians, it was therefore decided that there were no remaining options but to remove it in the near future. With big shoes to fill for locals I spoke to some long term Scartho residents about how this change to the landscape has been noticed by them since the tree was sadly removed... https://soundcloud.com/adam-walsh-866865245/3a-1 With the removal of the locally famous christmas lights from the cherry tree in preparation for the tree's future demolition, local councillors made an unsuccessful bid earlier this year to save the doomed village centrepiece dubbed "a little Scartho-y landmark" by one local resident that I spoke to. Ron...

Potential Clifford’s tower visitor centre causes uproar

Potential Clifford’s tower visitor centre causes uproar

Following the granting of planing permission for a visitor centre to be built into the Motte at Clifford's tower in York over a year ago, Councillor John Hayes MBE has headed up a campaign to save the monument from this fate. The issue at hand is not the design of the centre, but actually the location as the councillor himself explains... https://youtu.be/-MAM1ZScsVI *The motte being the mound on which Clifford's Tower sits. Councillor Hayes and his fellow campaigners believe that English Heritage's aim to reduce the risk of the steep entrance to the tower whilst providing a more encompassing and accessible visit is not reason enough to interfere with the structure of the historical tower. After losing a recent legal battle attempting to overturn the decision, the campaign of local citizens lead by the councillor have been ordered to pay a £5000 fee to cover York City's legal costs over the issue. Despite this, the group is still hopeful of stopping the construction, and are busy...

Grimsby Town investment deal confirmed

Grimsby Town investment deal confirmed

Massive investment from the government and private bodies has been confirmed for Great Grimsby by central government.   On the 27th of November, the proposal put forward by North East Lincolnshire Council for investment in housing, culture, heritage and businesses was confirmed in the government’s new industrial strategy.   The deal being enshrined in the government’s 2017 Industrial strategy announcement made by the Prime Minister, Theresa May. Working with major partners in the private investment industry such as Associated British Ports (ABP) as well as Ørsted (formerly Dong Energy) this deal has been more than 12 months in the making.   Coucillor Ray Oxby, leader of North East Lincolnshire council, said “£218 million of investment” is expected over the development of this deal. He went on to point out the significance of this deal for the town:   “It will act to stimulate the local economy, through government funding and heritage lottery funding and other support.   This is the first town deal ever enshrined in a government document, which gives us...

Video Vox Pop

https://youtu.be/XLqlFX9fI7o Contextualising Statement:   This task required group and individual work, as the interviewing section of the task meant that one individual had to operate the sound and recording equipment whilst the other interviewed members of the public. Due to the small window of three hours that was available to get responses from the requisite number of pedestrians, as a pair we had to move to about five different locations around York. Unfortunately, due to the time constraints, we were unable to capture amy footage of the city to use in an introduction sequence. Therefore, I have had to make use of a mix of after effects and a commons licenced image to put together some sort of news-like introduction. To make the video as similar as possible to an actual introduction to a news sequence introduction to a video vox pop, the use of a jingle similar to that which is heard on a news station was added, although it was not...

CineRoman

https://youtu.be/flImvvDiBZ8?list=PLjmCjTbHQf-jmIAyh6ey38-s26PXAUZZX Contextualising Statement: This task required the telling of  a story through images that link together with accompanying audio. This task required both collaborative and individual work; the shoots themselves being carried out in  a two man team (due to the amount of equipment), but the topic of each shoot and all of the subsequent image selection and editing were individual tasks. The original story planning requirement for this task was challenging as a Cine Roman is not a commonly known medium and this was the first time that I had come across it, the idea was quite confusing at first and so I went for a very simple story progression. This meant that it would be easier to shoot and select all of the correct images that I would need to tell the story in the short time available to me. However, if I were to attempt a similar task again in the future I would designate far more time to the...

Interview with Reformed Cocaine Addict

https://youtu.be/pKLzZvu5nDM     Contextualising statement: With this Interview with graphics task, the main aim during filming was lighting and how best to make use of the lighting equipment that is available. Due to the nature of the interviewee's story, he wished for his identity to be kept a secret, so as to maintain his own privacy and that of his family. This ethical issue required extra planning and forethought in terms of how we would go about providing a similar product to one where the subject is not anonymous. In order to do this my group opted to use background lighting to set the tone of the footage due to the fact that the viewer would be missing out on the facial expressions that would have otherwise provided some form of tone. To do this we placed him in a designated seat and worked with the lights to best create an atmosphere that both emphasised the harrowing nature of his words and helped the...

Bond & Brett’s Quiz of the Week

Final Cut: https://youtu.be/PAUqEpvTAhk   Contextualising statement: The purpose of this task was to work as a group effectively to create a ten minute studio segment by the end of the four week period available. Effectively, this piece being placed on YouTube as well as being a group task that was carried out with correctly completed risk assessments, it should fulfil parts of the criteria of all three of the learning objectives set out for this module. During the creation and production of this group studio segment my role was to operate sound in the studio and on the VT's. This role included setting up the mic's with the contestants and presenters, ensuring that the presenters were able to hear the Production Assistant and controlling sound levels for the recording of both the main body of the studio segment itself and for each of the VT's. During the editing of the VT's I also helped the main editor in an editing team format to help complete...

Directing at university, skipping from lights to action

For some students, getting that vital first hand experience with a dream career can seem miles out of reach. What do you want to be? A West End director? A Polar Bear conservationist? A hot air balloon designer? With a little hard work, commitment and enthusiasm, at least one of those career paths isn’t that far fetched.   Most of us don’t have a complete plan, or if we do, it’s just a case of blind luck, a – hit-swing-and-a-miss-lets-hope-for-the-best – kind of setup. Or at least, that’s what it’s like for me.   In the case of this piece the situation is slightly different, if only ever so slightly, still it’s worth a shot.   Molly Burdett is a first year English student at the University of York and aspiring director, someone that I’ve known for the better part of a decade. And she ALWAYS has a plan. That is, without fail.   If you knew her like I do, the fact that she has already been...

Anti-Trump rally: York marches in protest

Protestor’s have gathered in St Helen’s square in a bid to voice their disagreement with President Trumps Muslim ban, before marching through the city. Residents of York carried out the unplanned march yesterday after hundreds of protestors gathered to hear speakers including Rachel Maskell, MP for York Central, as well as student representatives and veteran campaigners. Media student Reece Dunn had this to say about Donald Trump on the day: “We all thought it was a joke, and now it’s real and funnily enough everything that he said he was gonna do, he’s doing and now people are angry… I’ve never been to a march before, this is the first thing I’ve ever felt strongly about.” Labelled an ‘emergency demonstration’, York Momentum (the organisers) asked members of public to arrive for 5.00 PM to display signs and their discontent with the actions of the Trump administration. The triggered factor being the 90-day immigration ban brought in by President Donald Trump’s recent executive order that blocked...
