Current year of study: Third
Degree: Children, Young People and Society
Scholarship: Ed De Nunzio Scholarship
Why did you apply for the alumni-funded scholarship?
I applied for the scholarship because, I have no parental support as a care leaver. I have a son who is now 3 years old and at the time I had just moved into a house that was completely undecorated and uncarpeted. This was making it hard to study at home as it didn’t have that relaxing feel to it to help me study. This meant I was spending a lot of money travelling in to University on my days off to go and study in the library as I could not concentrate at home. It also meant having to spend more money on childcare to give me time to study.
How did the scholarship help you?
The funding has helped to provide me and my son a lovely, homely environment that is safe but also helps me to concentrate on my work at University. In the long run it is also saving me money on buses and childcare. Now my son has his safe space to play in his new dinosaur bedroom whilst I can focus on my university work.
It has also helped me to carry on funding my son’s regular hours at his nursery so that I have additional free time to spend at university if I wish to do extra support sessions to make my academic work better.
What would you like to say to those who contributed to your scholarship?
I would like to say a massive thank you to the Ed De Nunzio Charitable Trust for supporting me and enabling this funding. Without this funding it would have taken me years to save up the money to make my home a more effective study space but also a safe space for my son. With the remaining funding I have my sights set on getting some driving lessons to save myself some money on travel. Thank you very much!
