What would you say to those members of our alumni who donated to the alumni-funded scholarship?
I want to first thank all the able members and alumni for the opportunity I was given during the start of my first year at YSJ. It’s been an absolute dream come true for me to even be in my second studying at YSJ; words are not enough to describe it.
Why did you apply for the alumni-funded scholarship?
I applied for this scholarship because I still believe I can achieve something meaningful in my life despite my current situation as an asylum seeker. I didn’t want that to limit my goals. This scholarship has helped my mental health and anxiety and helped me in many ways by feeling some confidence in speaking about my experience in shaping what I expect in my future to come.
How has the scholarship supported your study?
I have always had passion for sports and my major is football and by volunteering and working in schools I have developed my knowledge. I have taken this into consideration and the opportunity to team up with the York Refugee action on working with kids. This will give me so much joy to work with the kids and share the knowledge gained during my YSJ undergraduate program.
Has the scholarship helped in any other way?
The finance I was given last year has helped me in so many ways that I can even imagine when it comes to transportation, food and equipment. It also helped with the essential needs for commuting to university during each week. I’m already looking forward to this session and I’m excited about the good things that are going to unfold.
Is there anything else you would like to say directly to our donors?
I want to thank our respective donors, and everybody involved in making this scholarship come into light. They have made my dream come true and have my undiluted gratitude for giving me this opportunity to be here in York having these wonderful experiences in this great city.
