Answer Key to the Then And Now Quiz:
The answers below are to the quiz a couple of posts ago. No peeking at the answers until you’ve tried to match the photos! Comments and additional information about the locations in the quiz are welcome! I certainly had fun and learned quite a bit putting this quiz together; I hope you did too trying to match the photos!
A – Cordukes block of 12 temporary classrooms
F – Opening of the “new” library in 1953. It became the Students’ Union in 1974 and was demolished in 2016
B – Swimming Pool, built in the 1960’s
K – and replaced by Fountains Learning Centre in 2004
C – St. John’s Walk on the Malton Rd. – blocks of flats (mostly) built in 2007-09
J – Heworth Croft student hostel, twin gymnasia and Math/Science depts., acquired and built starting in the early 1930s
D – Tennis Court in the back quad. It’s just possible that the player on the right is Canon Lamb, College Principal from 1945-1971 and a keen tennis player!
I – Part of Phoenix Court taken from the newly renamed Ripon Building, formerly New Wing
E – Limes student hostel, Heworth, opened 1952
G – Limes student hostel, Heworth, rebuilt 1999-2000
H – One of three Voluntary Aid Detachment wards using college spaces during World War I. The VAD hospitals were used for the convalescence of less-severely wounded soldiers
L – Room QA003 as it is now, Theatre Studio 4
