On the eleventh day of Christmas, York St John gave to me…
11 years of university status
2006 was a special year for York St John, as we were granted University status for the first time in the institution’s history. Having previously run degree programmes that were validated by the University of Leeds, meaning graduates would get a University of Leeds degree certificate, University status meant that for the first time, York St John could award it’s own degrees.
The title ‘York St John University’ was officially implemented on 1 October 2006.
Being granted University status also meant that York St John Principal Professor Dianne Willcocks CBE DL, became the first ever Vice Chancellor of the University, and one year later in 2007, Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, became the first ever Chancellor of York St John University.
