On the fourth day of Christmas, York St John gave to me…
A four sided Quad
If you ask someone to tell you their favourite part of our campus, the chances are that The Quad is likely to be up there, more than 170 years old, The Quad has been the heart of York St John for all but 5 years of the institutions history.
If you saw our blog on the first day of Christmas, you may have picked up on the fact that The Quad has not always been four sided. When first built in 1846, the Quad only consisted of three sides, The front, also known as Long Corridor, The north side, also known as Walker (after Principal Reverend H Walker), and the South side, also known as School Corridor. It wasn’t until 1903, a whole 57 later that the back of the Quad, or Nottingham (after Principal Reverend E.E Nottingham) was built, giving us the four sides quad that has become so iconic for many York St John students, staff and alumni.
Next time you visit York St John, take a closer at each side of the quad from the inside, and you’ll notice that the style of the fourth side, Nottingham, is noticeably different from the three original sides!
My room was on Nottingham corridor in my first year at St Johns. I have very fond memories of the Quad
