On the second day of Christmas, York St John gave to me…
Two Rolls of Honour
Welcome back to our York St John themed 12 days of Christmas, for the second day we’ve chosen to share our World War One and World War Two Roll of Honour, remembering former students of York St John who gave their lives in both conflicts,138 alumni in total, 84 who gave their lives in the first World War, and 54 who gave their lives in the second World War.
The Rolls of Honour are on display in the chapel, on the left and right of the double doors that take you in to the main body of the chapel.
One alumnus in particular was given special recognition in 2017 was John ‘Jack’ Harrison VC MC. Jack studied at York St John from 1910-12 before joining up with the war effort a few years later, he was killed in action in Oppy Wood in France on 3 May 1917, in an act of sacrifice and bravery that saw him posthumously awarded with the Victoria Cross. To commemorate the centenary of his death; Jack Harrison was awarded an honorary fellowship by York St John University during our graduation ceremonies in November 2017, which were attended by his living relatives.
You can read more about Jack in our blog from earlier in the year.
I am at the moment working on a study of the Garton on the Wolds War Memorial Cross, William Henry Hoggard is one of the names listed. I have researched his family but have no picture of him as yet, does anyone out there have one? Barrie.
