Special awards for our Certificate in Education alumni – Alumni Newsletter, Winter 2018

At the end of June 2019 York St John University will hold three days of very special ceremonies, welcoming alumni from as early as 1944 back to campus. Over the three days these alumni will be presented with Honorary Degrees to recognise their immense contribution to education.

Until the 1980s, primary and many secondary teaching students were awarded Certificates in Education instead of degrees. St John’s College York, Ripon College and the College of Ripon and York St John trained thousands of teachers, many of whom went on to inspire many more thousands of students, in careers spanning decades. Our alumni went on to work in schools, in colleges and in prisons, in adult education and with children with special educational needs – and York St John University is thanking them for their incredible impact with this award.

The degrees will be presented in ceremonies across three days. For more information or to register for the degree please get in touch!

    I’d like to sign up.
Got my certificate in 1968 at Ripon College of Education.

    Hi Alan
I too was at St John’s 1969-72 and I DID study History 🙂 I then married a Kiwi and migrated to New Zealand; I live in Christchurch and currently still teach part-time at the University of Canterbury. I would have liked my degree back in 1972 when I had to start from scratch again, part time, with my BA! But I loved my three years in York, especially history at Gray’s Court, and I am delighted York StJohn is offering the honorary BEd; I plan to be there in June!
    Cheers, Frieda

Hi. I’ll be there on the Wednesday, 26th.Hopefully will meet up with some long lost friends from the 1969-1972 era…
Best wishes to everyone involved in this.
Forty seven years to get this degree. ( must be one of the longest degree courses in history! Hang on : I didn’t study history…).
I remember some really good times at St. John’s, although I didn’t appreciate them at the time. Mmm.
    Love to all,
    Alan Scott
