Hi everyone!
You might have noticed that the Careers & Student Opportunities team are hiring.
That’s right – you could work with us for the 2017-18 academic year!
But why would you want to do that? I could give you a list of reasons: it’s well-paid, flexible, on-campus, and of course you’ll be working with a very friendly team… but I thought it might be better for you to hear from students who’ve already done it.
Danny, India and Chloe are all 3rd year students who have worked with us since last summer. Here’s what they have to say about being a Careers Ambassador:
What’s been your favourite part of working with the Careers & Student Opportunities team this year?
Chloe Wood: Being involved in lots of teamwork, meeting and chatting to new people and becoming more involved in campus life and other students in general.
Danny Cockroft: Improving my own CV and cover letters and learning how to get ahead through interviews, etc., whilst being paid!
India Tordoff: Meeting new people and networking.
Is there anything you would change about being a Careers Ambassador, if you could?
CW: I’d have worked at a wider range of events, if I’d had time alongside my studies.
IT: More responsibility within the role. [Editor’s note: those applying this year can take charge of their own projects!]
DC: Somehow making the majority of students realise how vital the information we are providing is!
What new skills have you gained from being a Careers Ambassador?
DC: General computer skills (e.g., scheduling appointments etc. in other’s diary) and knowing where to look for the best career information.
CW: Some things I have done before that the Careers Ambassador role helped me to expand on are customer service and admin experience. Also gaining confidence in speaking in front of a large group, communication and telephone skills.
IT: YES! Communication, confidence, networking, professional etiquette and improved computer skills.
Would you recommend this job to other students?
IT: Yes, it is an accessible job that fits well around your degree. The staff are more than helpful and a pleasure to work with.
DC: Yes, it’s a flexible role which can earn you money whilst you enhance your own career prospects.
CW: Yes! If you want to gain confidence in speaking in front of a large group of people you get the opportunity to practice in this role, it really helped me. The front desk work will give you admin experience which from my experience puts you in good stead for applying to any graduate job. The hours are flexible to you so you can easily balance it alongside your degree.
Do you feel more prepared for the future after being a Careers Ambassador than you did before?
All 3: YES!
Sound good? Applications are open until midnight on 2nd April 2017. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail us at careers@yorksj.ac.uk or you can drop into our dedicated space in Holgate between the hours of 10 and 5 Monday to Thursday, and 10-4 on Fridays.
