Hi! I’m Abby, a 2nd year English Literature student here at York St John. I’m also currently doing my work placement with the Careers & Student Opportunities team.
York St John Jobs and Opportunities is the university’s way of displaying current vacancies for students. It is an essential resource for any students who are looking for specific roles, or even just exploring what’s currently available.
It is easy to navigate. Simply log in with your details and search for the vacancies that you are looking for. You can search by sector if you are not sure of the specific role you would like to apply for. Also you are able to narrow down the location or look at the whole of the United Kingdom. This is interesting when researching areas you may want to go into as it allows you to see what areas of the country have the most roles within that sector. This is interesting when thinking about what to do after university.
It offers many different jobs and opportunities. This includes:
- Graduate Level Jobs and Internships
- Part Time Work
- Voluntary Work
- Work Experience Opportunities
This wealth of different types of roles helps to offer all students different types of opportunities. This means that whatever role you are looking for will all be held in one place. In addition, each role is approved by the university and this means that students are able to feel confident that all roles are legitimate. Furthermore, the Jobs and Opportunities page is a good resource to use for those students who are looking for a work placement as part of their course. This is because often volunteering opportunities as well as work experience are displayed on the page. This makes it easier to find the relevant work experience that is needed.
It is also interesting to use as a resource when thinking about a specific role you would like to apply for in the future. I often use the page as a way of searching for the kind of roles that I would be interested in applying for after graduating. This can help to cross-reference the skills and experience different employers are looking for. This can help me to work out not only what skills I have that are relevant to the roles, but also the skills that I would need to develop in preparation for the future. For example I know that I have organisation skills as well as written communication skills that are relevant to what I would like to do in the future. However, I know that I will need to develop my presentation skills before I can successfully apply for roles. Looking ahead can mean that any issues that may arise can be address before the time where I need to apply for these roles.
Jobs and Opportunities have also helped me to search for part time work during my time at university. This has helped me to find jobs roles to apply for not only in York, but also in my hometown. This means that I am able to search for a wide range of different roles. This is good due to the fact that I commute and it is often difficult to find relevant roles in both areas. The Jobs and Opportunities page make it easy to search for roles across both areas and this makes it easier to see the roles that are relevant to me.
Overall, Jobs and Opportunities is a vital resource for using throughout your time at university. This is interesting for researching and looking for part time work and volunteering opportunities. I would recommend it to all students as it can help with every aspect of employability during your time at university. In addition, it would be particularly interesting for students applying for graduate jobs or second years who are trying to decide what they want to do after university.
