Maybe you’re a first year and you’ve never considered careers before. Maybe you’re a second year and you have a work placement module coming up in second semester. Maybe you’re a third year and you have no idea what you want to do after university and now you’re panicking!
Well, don’t panic, because YSJ has a dedicated Careers, Placements and Student Opportunities team that are ready and raring to help you!
YSJ Careers, Placements and Student Opportunities are made up of a dedicated team of a whole range of Advisors, Graduate Interns and Careers Ambassadors who can help!
The Advisors are here to help you find part-time work during university and full-time work after university! They run drop-in sessions every week where you can come in and get an idea of where to start looking for jobs. They also run bookable sessions where they will meet with you one to one to go over job applications, CV help, interview techniques, where to find volunteer and work placements, and basically anything career related that you can think of!
The Graduate Interns are students that have graduated from university to work within careers. They know first-hand what it’s like to go through the fears of finding a job. They know exactly what it feels like to be in your position, so they will be able to offer some great advice on what else you can do aside from a job, such as an internship at our very own university!
Career Ambassadors are students just like you. They’re the ones that sit in the careers centre and smile at you as you walk through Holgate. These lovely people have been trained to help with any pressing questions you may have, like:
- Is there a place where I can find part-time job advertisements on the university website?
- What’s a 3-D CV?
- How can I book a career’s appointment?
- Does the Careers department have social media?
- What fairs are coming up?
The Careers Ambassadors can answer all of these questions and more! So if you don’t fancy talking to someone older and scarier, pop along to the careers centre in Holgate and talk to one of your fellow students!
The Careers department also run lots of different fairs and workshops to ensure you get the best out of your university experience! Want to do some volunteering? Pop along to one of the Volunteering fairs to find about local and international experience! Want to find some work experience to boost your CV? Pop along to one of the Work Placement and Graduate fairs! You can find out about all of the upcoming fairs by following the Careers team on social media!
So now you know what the Careers team offer, why don’t you pop down and have a chat with them!
The Careers Centre is in Holgate next to HG013 (the glass room by the automatic doors) – just opposite the corridor to the canteen!
