Reflective Writing

This task was beneficial to me as it enabled me to understand what it is like to be in an industry situation where a client  is depending on you for content. It is important to understand your clients intentions as well as using your own creative initiative and ensuring these two factors are balanced. I am reasonably confident in presenting however I decided to research some advice to ensure I was conveying my intentions efficiently. I was slightly nervous before presenting however I had previously read that Bowden (2013) suggests that fighting through nerves is important to make the most out of an opportunity, show people what you are capable of and have fun.

We worked efficiently as a group to present our individual visions for the video and collaborate these ideas together to present on a PowerPoint. As we were in a small group of three, it was easier to communicate and work productively noting the bands and each other’s ideas. Prior to collaborating, the band’s brief addressed to us their intentions and ideas for the video. Their aim was to address contemporary trends in order promote the brand to a wide audience through popular trends. It is important to set up goals and objectives early and ensure that everybody is aware of these. Millerson (2012) suggests it is essential to understand what you want your audience to gain from viewing your video as this guides the production process. The aim of this music video was to entertain the audience as well as promote the band and their image.

Allocating the finances of the budget was a new challenge for me however I felt confident in volunteering myself. I read ‘The standard contingency for most productions is 10 percent of your budget’ as quoted by Wales (2005) pg.54. Furthermore Irving (2013) suggests that postproduction can overwhelm beginners when it comes to budgeting and is often neglected. There can often be unknown costs that arise at this stage that you need to be prepared for. With this in mind I ensured that although we ensured that we had everything we needed for the shoot, we also had a surplus in case it was needed.
