Engaging with national policy

April 26, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Three people sitting at a table working on laptops.

Facilitator: Dr Joseph Bailey, Lecturer in Geography

RDF Indicators: D3, D2, and B3

Programme: Research CPD Programme 2021-22

Theme: Core research skills

Session Overview: We will discuss why it is worthwhile engaging with national policy, and some means by which to do so. This will be based on, but go beyond, my own experience of leading an evidence-based policy briefing note regarding the UKs Government’s target to protect 30% of land and seas for nature by 2030, which I got involved in by responding to an academic society’s call for expertise. There will also be time to consider how we can plan to engage with policy when designing our research, and how to recognise opportunities for using your existing expertise and publications. N.B the particular topic of protected areas will feature only as a case study and this session will have much more general applicability.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Develop an appreciation for the value of engaging with national policy, what ‘evidence’ is, and some of the ways in which evidence is used by Parliament.
2. Appreciate some means by which to engage with national policy, including how to find and make the most of opportunities presented by academic societies.
3. Learn some of the practicalities of writing a collaborative policy briefing note.

Delivery method: On campus (SK036)
