Thinking like a journalist

February 22 @ 9:15 am - 11:45 am

Sarah Niblock

Session Overview:

Did you know that how you write the first sentence of your research funding bid can determine whether or not you are successful? Where do you even start with ‘public engagement’? Are you struggling to narrow down a big research idea into a pithy paper or book chapter?

Led by a professor with more than 30 years’ experience in national and international journalism, this 2.5-hour practical workshop will help you to translate complex concepts into accessible, succinct terms in order to:

  • Inspire bold research ideas,
  • Boost your grant bid writing,
  • Inspire impact, public benefit and public engagement ideas,
  • Craft social media assets, blogs and features for a range of target audiences.

This workshop is ideal at any stage in your academic career. You may already be an experienced researcher aspiring to become a public intellectual or you might be just embarking on a research or scholarship journey towards promotion.

Research Council UK:

“Public Engagement can provide substantial benefits to the researchers involved in engaging the public, as well as providing a major contribution to society. Engaging the public can also improve the quality of research and its impact, by widening research horizons. We achieve this through involving, listening and interacting with the public”.

The workshop will be led by YSJU honorary visiting professor Sarah Niblock – an academic, coach and media expert who has trained household name journalists. She has presented this training to academics in fields as diverse as STEM subjects and psychotherapy in London, Edinburgh and online. Her research has been featured in top media brands globally, including live broadcasts on BBC Radio 4, TV, documentaries and public broadcasting in Canada and the US. She has spoken to paying audiences at the ICA, Latitude Festival and South Bank Centre.
