Self Portrait Task

@ysjmedia This is my self portrait, I think it sums me up pretty darn well.

Rationale under cut

Originally this task baffled me, I didn’t understand why we had to film ourselves being ourselves. At the time of original filming I was not in the best place regarding mental health and I was not ready to face the task at hand. I already felt like I had to perform every day and then was told to film it, I created a video that I think shows the worst parts of me and does not represent myself at all, therefore I scrapped it and ignored the task completely.

Later on, this task was possibly the easiest to film and complete as it was filmed at the same time as the video vox pop task. My self-portrait consists of the outtakes/bloopers from the video vox pop, our group ended up gathering nearly twice as much footage of me being silly than actual footage that could be used for the vox pops. We were filming on what I would consider a ‘good’ day where I had lots of energy, albeit nervous energy but there was little anxiety with talking that day and I think that made me appear more approachable in the street.

I think I was acting a lot during filming, in reality I am a fairly childish person and I want to make people happy but I was playing up to the part I created for myself. Overall, we were having a good time filming, we weren’t concerned with trying to gather lots of people to be interviewed and I was more focused on keeping the people I was working with happy so that standing outside in the cold for hours wouldn’t seem so bad.

By using the outtakes of the video vox pop as footage for my self-portrait, I ended up saving a lot of time and resources.

In regards to creating an online presence; I think I have managed to create a character who is upbeat, fun and a little bit weird. I think the way I acted in my self-portrait is an exaggerated version of myself that is best suited to only be seen in video. It is inspired by extroverted online personalities such as Tyler Oakley (YouTube) and Hannah Hart (YouTube), these people are well-known for being content creators on YouTube and having recognisably extroverted personalities. The intended audience would be the same age group as these online content creators, teenagers who are easily entertained by extroverted people.

The editing in the video is simplistic and reflects what I like, nothing that is overly complicated. However formatting the video for Instagram was far more difficult than I thought. If I was given the opportunity to redo this task, I would not change any of the content in the video, it has proven to me that I make people happy.
