Semester one module: Deaf History

We’re very excited to meet you all in September, and looking forward to sharing our courses with you. In the meantime, if you want to do some preparatory work before you come to university, have a look at the resources below –

Please read this academic article – https://doi.org/10.1080/02614360902951690. It gives a good insight into the sort of concepts and ideas we will be using and thinking about in the Deaf History module.

Spend some time looking at some of the history programmes you can find here –https://www.bslzone.co.uk/watch/deaf-history (plus any other programmes on BSL Zone that catch your fancy!). This will give you a good idea of the breadth of deaf history and the interesting characters that inhabit it.

Finally, explore the UCL Ear Institute and RNID Library blog – https://blogs.ucl.ac.uk/library-rnid/. It’s a fantastic resource for all sorts of historical information relating to deaf people and deaf communities.

If you want to buy one of the course textbooks before you arrive, I recommend Ladd, P. (2003) Understanding Deaf Culture: In Search of Deafhood. You can buy this from the publisher’s website here – http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781853595455.
