Live Studio Task

Contextualising Statement

For the studio task, as a group we had to work together within a limited time frame. We were told we would be filming a live show in a weeks’ time. From this, we had to find 4 ideas to film VT’s on, keeping organised and assigning roles around each of our schedules, due to all of us having other commitments. An important skill I learnt within this task was how to work effectively within a team. “Working in teams gives you a very different learning experience” (Levin, 2004).

We decided it would be best if we split into groups depending on who was available when, therefore I was there to film all 4 VT’s and solo edit the Fossgate Festival VT and the York Minster VT. We decided that due to the show being aimed at 18-24 -year olds, more casual visuals were fitting, as we planned the show to be something that would be uploaded to YouTube. Filming and editing on an iPad allowed us to work from home and achieve a consistent look throughout. Skills we had learnt from the mobile journalism task were also applied to this task.

After the rush of the last week, we had to film the live show in the two-hour slot provided. Due to high stress, many options were being discussed, therefore we all sat down and have an organised conversation. “The effectiveness of one’s communications are important” (West, Tjosvold and Smith, 2005).

My role within the studio was vision mixer and timekeeper. This always meant that I had to be aware, making sure I was playing the correct VT and we were hitting the 5 minutes mark on the recording.
