A-Z Tools & Technologies: iPads
What is an iPad?
I would be very surprised if anybody reading this post hadn’t heard of or used an iPad before. Over the past 10 years, iPads and other tablet/mobile devices have formed the bedrock of mobile learning.
Mobile learning is considered to be the ability to use mobile devices to support teaching and learning. It is the ‘mobile’ aspect of mobile learning that makes it stand apart from other types of learning, specifically designing learning experiences that exploit the opportunities that ‘mobility’ can offer us. What about Teaching and Learning?
Mobile and tablet devices have huge potential in Higher Education and are currently having a big impact on the way in which people are both Teaching and Learning.
Over the past 18 months, Learning & Teaching Development at York St York John University have been running an iPad (mobile learning) project. The project aims to provide opportunities for staff to be innovative and to increase student engagement in the classroom. It’s main focus is on exploring the benefits of using iPads in group work and collaborative learning activities. You can find more about the initiative on the project blog.
We’re not the only institution using iPads to enhance Teaching, Learning and Assessment. Take a look at what other institutions are doing:
- University of Huddersfield – Evaluating academics’ use of iPads for academic practices
- Sheffield Hallam University – Mobile Device Evaluation Project
- Manchester Medical School – How I use my iPad?
- University of Hull – iPad Research in Schools
