A-Z Tools & Technologies: Meetoo
What is it?
When I attended ALT-C in September I saw a demo of Meetoo, which had only recently moved into offering to Education, a tool that allows you to engage with your audience through live polling and discussions.
How does it work?
Once you have joined Meetoo you are given a personalised link that takes you to your dashboard. From here you can set up the ‘meetings’ (it was originally set up for businesses so refers to meetings, although these are just your lecture / lesson times) and polls. Both of these are quick and easy to set up. The polling functionality has recently been updated, it now allows a ‘correct answer’ to be selected so students can see if they were right.
When you start your session your students have to enter a code to join the ‘meeting’, they can do this on the free downloadable app or the Meetoo website.
Once students have joined the they can then take part in the polls/questions as well as send questions in what Meetoo call the discussion tool. The discussion tool is similar to a chat room, but one which can be moderated to ensure it stays on topic. Once the ‘meeting’ has ended you can download reports on the discussion and polling.
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
The polling tool can be used to engage your learners and test their knowledge in lectures. You can ask questions throughout to check understanding and share this with students and identify any gaps in knowledge. You could carry out your mid-module evaluation using a series of polls, you do have the option to make responses anonymous.
The discussion tool is useful to allow students to ask questions throughout the lecture without interrupting the flow. Another way you could use it is to facilitate student discussions, or it could be utilised to get open ended student responses to questions.
They offer a free account available for education, which allows up to 100 students per meeting. If you want to have a trial with it before signing up or learn more about it just send us an email to arrange this: tel@yorksj.ac.uk.
Can you see any advantages of using Meetoo to ask questions or polls in lectures? How could you use the discussion/chat tool? Would you like to try using Meetoo in one of your lectures? How do you stimulate engagement and participation in lectures? Are there any apps that you’d like to learn more about? As always let us know in the comments!
We’ll also be showcasing some other student engagement apps at our ‘TEL Me About’…Student Engagement Tools workshop on Monday 6 February 2017. Book your place by visiting our Eventbrite page.

I’m a great fan of apps with promote interaction.
The free education account allows you to have 100 people logged on, although this is not adequate for our current cohort sizes of 140-170.
I currently use Socrative with the students both within the whole cohort lectures and within smaller workshops – I have also seen the students use this within their own student led sessions once it has been modelled for them.
I’m not sure whether MeeToo offers any more functionality than Socrative.

Hi Ian,
You’re right that the ‘freemium’ tools often come with a catch in terms of how many users you can have and they’re often not suitable for big cohorts in universities if you want to use them in a lecture setting. We’re gradually building up our A-Z page of different tools and technologies, so we’ll definitely cover Socrative in the next few weeks because we haven’t done a post for that yet. The best thing about a lot of these tools is trying them out and figuring out which ones work best for you and your students.

Thanks for the Meetoo review @Emma Fletcher, really informative and gives some great ideas for a variety of uses. These webinar recording also illustrate some real use cases of Meetoo by lecturers and learning technologists – https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlzqELS7kmtSJsxscfkYo-l4MDKtvEQaW
Hi Ian, The Meetoo free account, as mentioned, allows you to connect with up to 100 students per session. The software can connect with thousands at a time if needed, its built for scale. We have Individual and Institutional Plans available which would suit larger class sizes, you can find out more here – http://www.meetoo.com/pricing#tab-1. We’d be happy to offer you a free Christmas upgrade to our Individual Plan until the end of February 2017, if you’d be interested in trying out Meetoo contact education@meetoo.com.
