YSJUCU stands in solidarity with Palestine.

Along with UCU national and other trade unions, we reiterate the growing demands for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and an end to Israeli occupation, including ‘the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, unrestricted access to humanitarian aid, and the lifting of the siege of Gaza’ (see UCU, Ceasefire Now!).

We are in solidarity with all UK students currently protesting and occupying university campuses in solidarity with Palestinian liberation, from the University of Leeds to Goldsmiths in London.

We currently have postgraduate students from Palestine at York St John University whose families are trapped in Gaza. To support these students and others in similar situations, please sign this petition for a Palestinian family visa scheme, akin to that created for Ukrainian families.

About us:

The York St John University Branch of UCU works proactively, reactively and collaboratively to improve our workplace conditions and to defend and uphold our professional rights.

UCU is involved in a number of issues, both locally here at YSJ, and nationally and internationally, because ‘an injury to one is an injury to all’. To keep abreast of all issues, look out for our emails to members (check your ‘quarantined’ messages in Outlook and add YSYUCU as an accepted sender).

The Branch aims to hold a meeting for members every month (either online or hybrid). Invitations will be sent to the email address you used when you registered with UCU, so do check at My UCU that your email address is up to date.

Branch meetings are your opportunity to connect with other members, vote on motions, and share your workplace experiences with the Committee. We can best represent you, if you come to the meetings and join the discussion. The meetings are where we build solidarity and support each other.

The Branch Committee meet regularly with HROD and members of the Executive Board (EB) to discuss workplace concerns that the Branch meeting collectively asks the Committee to raise, such as workload issues, staff mental health, sick leave, reasonable adjustments, timetable, marking and assessment, promotion, regrading, international collaboration etc. Your anonymity will be protected when discussing issues raised by UCU members with HR/EB.

Committee members also access support from the Regional UCU office and represent the YSJ Branch at National UCU gatherings. You can find out more about national campaigns and training opportunities on the main UCU website.

For further information, or if you have any workplace concerns, please see the links below to follow us on social media or reach us by email. (We will do our best to respond as soon as possible, but please bear in mind that Committee members have very little, if any, workload allocation for trade union duties. We serve on the Branch Committee because we care about you, your health and wellbeing, and your working conditions.)
