Modern Jazz- Isobel Lloyd-Owen

I created this piece, inspired by the quilt “modern Jazz”. I studied elements of the quilt and built up a picture in my mind of what I wanted to create. The piece I have made is a 20cm-by-20cm digital creation, made up of similar colours that can be seen in the inspired quilt design. I wanted to convey the same type of panels that can be seen within the original quilt and make them into my own design, allowing me to explore the arrangement of colours and patterns. I thought about altering the type of designs that I kept in the piece, but I didn’t feel as thought it would either capture the chaotic vibrancy or look as though it belonged in association to the “modern jazz” quilt.

I felt as though a modern approach for responding to this quilt was needed in order to make it more of my own adaptation. This response was created digitally, on a drawing/editing application that I’m very familiar with using. to keep ties to the original I also used the same colours by taking them directly from “modern jazz”. I crafted the design and tiles by identifying key elements within the quilt and exploring the alignment of them as well as how they sit with each other in a sense of colour composition.
