’65ers Publish 50-Year Update
In October 2015, a number of alumni returned to York St John to celebrate 50 years since they had met as Year 1 PE students in 1965. During that weekend, they ran short of time to say and share all they would have liked to do, so the idea of a book was born. Now scattered throughout the UK, the group located and contacted others in their PE cohort and began collecting material. During the summer of 2016, the book was sent to the printers and copies made for all in the cohort who had been contacted.
On September 1, 2016, seven members of the group plus wives came to York and presented a copy of the published book to the Heritage Room. They enjoyed some time in the Heritage Room swapping stories and looking up records and photographs in the collection before adjourning for lunch and further conversation in the university cafeteria.
As far as we are aware, this is the first YSJ alumni group to publish such a record, and it is hoped their example will inspire others. Indeed, the leadership in the group would be keen to share their experience with other alumni groups interested in a similar publishing venture.
Credit is due to everyone in the group who contributed to the book and especially to Les Padfield, editor; Michael Platt, researcher, sub editor and proofeader; and John Wedrychowski, sub editor and computer geek. The university copy of the book is on display in the Heritage Room.
