Your Alumni Magazine will be arriving soon – alumni Newsletter, summer 2019

We are very excited to announce that the first issue of 1841, the new Alumni Magazine, will soon be sent out to our UK based former students, with an online version available for our international alumni. 1841 is full of all our latest  news, focussing on the ways we look to have a positive impact on our local and wider community, together with updates from our Alumni and memories of our long history. 1841’s first issue includes a snapshot of the ground-breaking research our academics are involved in, an overview of the events that are coming up at York St John (which, don’t forget, are free) and an update on the mental health work the University is engaged in.

The magazine also features a very interesting find from our archives: an extract from the 1965 Students’ magazine, The White Rose, in which German student Margrit Nieland recounted about her experience of studying at St John’s college as an exchange student. “I found everybody extremely friendly and tolerant”, Margrit wrote. “Among themselves the students were kind and tolerant which I believe to be a good basis for community life”. It was a pleasant surprise to realise that York St John’s inclusive atmosphere and sense of community were appreciated during our history as much as they are now and to find out that our institution already offered study abroad opportunities in the 1960’s.

This is just a taste of what this unmissable issue 1841 will offer. If you’re not sure whether we have up to date contact details for you, e-mail us your current postal and e-mail addresses to make sure you don’t miss the magazine.

Look forward to reading your magazine. I was a student there 1958/60. Any news on the honorary degrees ‘we oldies’ are being given?
