Studio Task- Student Overload

Contextualising Statement

For our final group task, we had to produce a 5-minute news show which focused on the lifestyle of people aged 18-24 in York. Working in a group of 7, we named our show Student Overload and we decided to base it on a YouTube channel as the target audience for YouTube, is 18-24-year olds. Working in a group for this task, meant it was essential everyone had a role. The advantage of groupwork is that everyone can develop a host of skills that are important for the working world. Being the producer/director, it was my responsibility to ensure everything ran correctly in the studio.

For our vox pop VT’s, we chose to do Fossgate festival and accommodation. Our aim was to explore money saving ways to have fun as a student and managing money in terms of living in York’s accommodation. Regarding the VT’s, being a YouTube channel, we wanted to make them fun and engaging. So, we looked at fitness at Energi Trampoline Park and living in York as a city.

We chose to film everything on IPad’s, this meant it was easier to take to locations and our risk assessment wasn’t as complex as we used our own IPad’s and borrowed a lavalier microphone. We edited everything together on iMovie, but we had a few technical issues in the studio when transferring them. Adornato said, “iMovie is my go-to video editing app. It’s an easy to use app for video stories that require a combination of visual and audio tracks”. (Adornato 2018:107) However, this was quickly resolved but it wasted rehearsal time.
