Where Ideas Grow

A blog for students of creative writing at York St John University

Article Submission Guidelines 2024

Do you want to get your voice out into the literary world, but don’t have a creative writing piece on hand?

Where Ideas Grow also accept articles!

Please see the guidelines for article submissions below:

Your article should be no more than 1,000 words.

This piece of writing can explore objectives regarding the publishing and literary industries or could take a more personalised stance.

Please see below for examples of what you could base your article on:

  • A selection of personalised writing tips
  • An exploration into reader-centric communities e.g Booktok, Bookstagram etc
  • A particular writing style/trope/genre you enjoy, and why you believe it contributes to a good story
  • An interview with a literary specialist – e.g a writer, an editor, an agent etc
  • Your own experiences with creative writing – when did you realise that this was something you wanted to do long-term? What is special about writing to you?
  • You do not have to write about one of these things in order to be accepted.

For a further example of how you could format and structure your article, please follow the provided link to ‘Being Specific: Making Characters Real’ by Anna Edwards (1/4 of 2024’s editorial team!): Being Specific: Making Characters Real – Where Ideas Grow (yorksj.ac.uk)

Please submit your article as a Microsoft Word Document (.docx). This should be emailed to whereideasgrowblog@gmail.com

In the subject line of your email, please include:

  • Your full name (or, otherwise, the name that you would like to appear on the blog)
  • The name of your article
  • “(Article)” in brackets – as shown.

Your article can be published anonymously, but please make this clear in your email – either in the subject line or the email body.

You can submit multiple articles, but please only send one at a time.

All accepted submissions will be promoted on our social media sites, unless the submitter states otherwise. This will include our Instagram (@whereideasgrowblog) and Twitter (@wigblogysj).

Please contact whereideasgrowblog@gmail.com with any questions!
