Interview Task

Rationale under cut

I decided the theme for the interviews would be ‘questions you don’t really get asked’; the outcome of the video ended up coming across as playful and light-hearted, this was helped by the colourful animated graphics and choice of background music.

Although this wasn’t an interview that was focused on one individual, a lot more attention during filming was put onto experimenting with different types of lighting. For example, the colour filter of the backlight was changed for each person as well as the height of the lights which gave a different effect with each change. The key light and fill light remained a constant colour but also changed height. The lighting set up was changed with each person to demonstrate what I had learned regarding the three-point lighting kit; what colours are best for changing the atmosphere and how different heights can drastically change how someone appears. For example in Alice’s section the backlight is directly behind her head, lighting up her hair and creating the illusion of a halo. For Victoria’s section I wanted to try and create a lens flare without having to add one in digitally, this took a lot of experimenting to get the right angle but I am quite pleased with how her section turned out. Since I had done two fairly dramatic lighting set-ups, I wanted to have one that looked more ‘natural’. Therefore the last section’s lighting consisted of a high backlight with no coloured filter. As I was the interviewee for the last section, adjusting the lights to what I wanted was fairly difficult. To get the lights in a good position, we adjusted them and took a picture so I could decide if it was what I wanted. We had to repeat this process several times before actually filming that section.

To follow the guidelines of the brief, animated graphics were added. In my video these graphics introduce each person on screen and also show what question they are answering, the colours used on the graphics match with the colour of the backlight on the individual, this was done to create some sense of continuity. I believe I made a good decision with interviewing three people instead of one as there is more to see in the one minute video and it is often easier to watch a video with a faster pace than one with little to no changes on screen. This also gave me the opportunity to demonstrate the skills I gained in using After Effects by adding more graphics with varying looks. As specified on the brief, the video was uploaded to Vimeo. To improve I would follow the brief more directly by focusing on one person and asking them specific questions, although I am pleased with what I created.
