Study Abroad – Miyazaki International College

Miyazaki International College

“an unforgettable experience!”

By Isaac Govan

As a student of York St John who may want to spend a year abroad in Japan, it’s an experience I can’t recommend enough!
I’m currently studying in Miyazaki prefecture in the south of Japan. It’s a place where friendly faces, amazing cuisine, beautiful palm-laden beaches and quintessential Japanese charm and kindness combine in every possible corner. It’s not one of the biggest name cities, or most populated prefectures, but it makes up for that in character: being voted the happiest prefecture in the country, having a jam-packed list of sightseeing spots, a beautiful sea-front known for its being a sunny surf-filled holiday destination and a unique sense of identity.
While one is able to enjoy the mod-cons, nightlife and the subtropical paradise that is Miyazaki city, I found that many of my favourite memories usually included travelling deep into the middle of nowhere, getting many
curious questions and kindly offers of green tea from folk amongst brilliantly adorned and fervently well kept lavish temples, and exploring the quiet, historical heart of the country (usually only just catching the last train back!)
Are there difficult moments? As much as one should expect: you’ll be away from your family and friends, and it can be hard to adjust to a country and environment where you might not have a perfect grasp on the language.
That being said it’s a learning experience! Personally I found it to be the case where I grew in tolerance, humility and resolution to improve when faced with a problem, and I’m sure if you decide to embark on a study abroad program you’ll learn more about yourself and how to face such problems, too.
In brief, I’d absolutely recommend studying abroad in both Japan and Miyazaki, and I’m sure you’ll have an unforgettable experience!
