Decreasing NHS Staff and Winter is Coming

The number of NHS staff is at the lowest it has been in three years which could be causing major disruption to care. The government cuts to the NHS which begun in 2010 has had a huge impacted on their ability to cover the costs of the amount of staff and resources or efficient machines needed to provide efficient care to the vast number of patients.

The short amount of staff is making NHS hospitals a stressful and an unwanted place of work. “Staff is limited on most wards, due to this staff often feel under pressure

and overworked which can lead to many staff wanting to leave and look for jobs elsewhere” said by an auxiliary nurse from Hull Royal infirmary.

The lack of staff gets harder to deal with as the year goes on and gets nearer the time of winter, many hospitals are forced to open a winter ward with its own set of staff just to deal with the number of patients that are admitted into hospitals over that time.

It has been estimated to say that one in 11 posts that are needed within hospitals are not being filled. Which was with winter just around the corner is a causing a real worry among staff, “there won’t be enough staff to deal with the amount of people who will be coming in” says the nurse.

NHS Digital figures shows that 87,478 vacancies were advertised by the NHS between January and March which shows the amount of people that is needed to keep the hospitals going. Due to the high intensity of strain that NHS staff are under it has led to more employees leaving the NHS to work in places such as; the private sector, care homes, drug firms, moving aboard or leaving nursing altogether which is a problem for the welfare of the public

There have been many plans implicated to try fight the decreasing number of workers which included going aboard to find new staff. “we have lots of staff come from abroad to fill the roles of doctors and nurses that are needed, to help with the work load” said Hull Royal Nurse. However, this tactic of foreign staff is coming at a cost which the NHS is struggling to keep with their budget when they need the money to combat winter.
