The Man Who Invented Christmas: Not the Christmas Film we were expecting?

The newly released film ‘The man who invented Christmas’ might not have been the typical Christmas filled film we were expecting from the title but more of the story behind the loved writer Charles Dickins and his timeless classic ‘A Christmas Carol.’

Set in 1843, its starts by showing Dickins in one of the hardest years of his career where his past three books had been majorly unsuccessful and creating doubts in the eyes of his publisher. However, timing couldn’t be worse as he had just started expensive home renovations and the not yet unannounced pregnancy of his fifth child.

During the struggle of writer’s block in such an important time in his life, the film portrays Dickens as a wacky character where his characters can just appear to him out of the blue in an almost theatrical sense where they talk to him and make him question his decisions.

Charles dickens was shown in the film getting highly scrutinized about the fact he wanted to write a Christmas novel. Everyone had their doubts like dickens writing something Christmas themed would be something unheard of and he wrote ‘A Christmas Carol’ on what could have been seen as whim despite the fact Dickins had previously written three other Christmas novels.

The film allows viewers to see into the writers past as a child and the struggles he went through and does give the heart-warming  feeling when Dickens when he learns to forgive his father, “ no one is useless in this world who lighten the burdens of another”, for grudges he held on to the past which relate to how his main character scrooge has a change in opinion to be a more thoughtful and caring person to let people into his life which is the same as  what Dickens was going though  in personal life.

Overall if you were looking for your typical cheery Christmas film ‘The man Who Invented Christmas’ probably isn’t the film for you. However, the film shows the classic Christmas tale in a different way, showing why the story is what it is and how it links to the authors life with still giving that Christmas good will to all message.
