Week 4 – Reflection
During this week, we looked at possible stories which could be included in The Yorkie. We pitched, researched and developed our ideas for a feature story.
My ideas for a possible story included:
Local heroes – My inspiration came from Humans of New York. This includes thousands of short interviews from regular people on the streets of New York. It includes some really fascinating stories and some inspirational ones also. I liked the idea of this because it is based on ‘real’ people. It’s a very raw topic which I do not think there is enough of in magazines; a high majority of publications either comprise of celebrities, important people and/or news.
Fashion – This would be in the style of a local street style guide. I took inspiration from an article in a local magazine and 303 Magazine. This would break down the outfits of people photographed in the street, it would also offer a guide into where to buy the best deals in York. I would chose both men and women to offer variety, however, this could be restricting as people may not want to be photographed and it would be difficult to cover all ages which we have included in our demographic. Furthermore, the ‘deals’ may become outdated.
Veganism/Vegetarianism/health – I have always found this an interesting topic and would like to look into it further. It is hard to find places to eat which cater for vegetarian’s/vegans, therefore I would include this in the article. Also, the peg would be ‘environmental issues’ as it is a concerning topic which needs to be acted on fast. Becoming a non-meat eater is good for the environment and I will touch up on this in the article, going into depth with the explanation as I research further into this.
I chose to write about local heroes in York. ‘Unsung heroes’ because it is a chance to celebrate local people – it gives recognition to the people of York for the good that they give back to the community. In order to search for inspiring/significant people, I took to social media and posted in local pages reaching out to anyone who would be willing to share their stories. During this research, I found a group of volunteers via Facebook which help the homeless all throughout the year. Also, homelessness is on the rise in York and is a constant problem throughout the country; I believe people need to be made aware of this. In order to develop my idea into a feature, I will be getting in touch with the volunteers page and asking if they would be happy to do an interview. From this, I can inquire about how they began the group, what work they do and how this is impacting the lives of the homeless – particularly with the upcoming winter months.
