Week 5 – The Yorkie Model

During week 5’s session we looked at different income models and how we could appropriate some of them to our magazine, theyorkie. These were the main ones we focused on:

  • Display advertising
  • Classified marketing
  • Native advertising/advertorial
  • Branded media
  • Online programmatic adverts
  • External/affiliate links
  • Subscriptions
  • Memberships
  • Events
  • Merchandise/shops

After looking at how each one operates we were then asked to explore which ones that we thought would best suit TheYorkie. With our magazine been a brand new publication in a local area, many of the business models listed above would be very difficult for us to follow as we have a lack of funding and a constraint on time.

Therefore, after consideration, I thought that the best business models for TheYorkie would be:

  • Branded media – which is a creator or publisher’s content that features or is influenced by a business partner for an exchange of value
  • Native Advertising – “Native advertising is a form of online advertising that matches the form and function of the platform on which it appears.” Material in an online publication which resembles the publication’s editorial content but is paid for by an advertiser and intended to promote the advertiser’s product.
  • Display advertisingis a form of advertising that conveys a commercial message visually using text, logos, animations, videos, photographs, or other graphics. Display advertisers frequently target users with particular traits to increase the ads’ effect.

How it will hook with our website:

With our magazine been distributed locally, display and native advertising could benefit both our magazine and local companies. With advertisements being incorporated to the magazine it allows us to display more content and become interacted with York which is predominately where it will be distributed. Companies will also benefit from this as they will have total freedom to what adverts they publish allowing our audience members to see what local businesses have to offer them. This will ultimately create revenue for the magazine and the companies.

Where will it be distributed:

With TheYorkie being a magazine that is all about York; it’s people and what is happening, I feel that it should be distributed around the city centre as that is the busiest area. Therefore, it should be distributed in different restaurants, café’s, bars and also niche businesses such as SparkYork which I would say has been an instrument into inspiring us into what kind of magazine we want to publish. Furthermore, following our demographics, we should distribute at the university as they are apart of our intended age group and will be the people most likely to read the magazine.

Following on from looking at income models, we were also instructed to have a think about visuals and the types of images we may use to accompany our features. As my feature tells the tale of the WW2 veteran, I photographed him wearing his army uniform with all his medals so that the audience would know exactly who’s story they were reading. As it is a person of interest story it only makes sense to include photograph of the interviewee. The photograph of Ken showcasing his medals gives my feature more depth. In addition to this, I will also use some smaller images that symbolise war, such as the poppy or images of cemetery’s in which veterans were laid to rest.
