This year’s YSJU Big Summer Read will be Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad! Everyone can join in — share your experience on social media with #YSJBigSummerRead
It is that time of year again — time for the YSJU Big Summer Read! As last semester drew to a close we canvassed suggestions for this year’s text and then invited everyone to vote both here on the blog and over on our Twitter.
The result after over 50 votes was a decisive victory for Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad:
Gwendoline Riley, First Love (12%)
David Lodge, Nice Work (16%)
Kate Atkinson, Behind the Scenes at the Museum (34%)
Colson Whitehead, The Underground Railroad (38%)
Described in The Guardian as a ‘thrilling, genre-bending tale of escape from slavery in the American deep south that contains some uncomfortable home truths’, this promises to be an exciting and poignant holiday read!
During the Big Summer Read everyone is invited to read the same novel at the same time and share your experience on social media using #YSJBigSummerRead
We will also publish a series of blog posts by YSJU staff and students exploring and responding to the novel. If you would like to contribute one of these posts, either or any aspect of the novel or simply sharing your own reflections on your reading experience, contact Adam Smith and let him know.
Let the reading commence!Â
