The process includes a combination of the following: face-to-face sessions and the use of an e-Portfolio (Dialogic route), or a typed document (Written route), to collate your individual evidence and reflections. The process will require you, normally, to engage in two formal meetings (‘Professional Dialogues’) with a mentor, who will be a peer from within the institution. The culmination of your work will be either a final professional dialogue, or the submission of your written piece of work on a specific date.

In total, you should plan to spend 15-20 hours of time engaging in this developmental process, over a period of 3 – 6 months.

The stages of the Fellowship process – these are explained further below.

1. Introductory session (1 hr)

This hour long session introduces participants to the UKPSF and to the different routes available within our accredited scheme through which you can make a claim for HEA Fellowship.

2. Group Start-Up Workshop (2-3 hrs)

This 2-3 hour workshop provides an opportunity for you to explore and map against the UKPSF, the types of evidence that you might include to meet the criteria of your Fellowship claim. You will have the opportunity to discuss your evidence with other participants and to explore examples of previous claims via both the written and dialogic routes. For those undertaking the dialogic route, this session provides a practical opportunity for you to become familiar with the e-Portfolio system.

3. Mentoring (at least 2 hrs)

You will be assigned a mentor after the start-up workshop via an introductory email. Mentors are trained and supported to undertake their role effectively. Part of our approach to mentoring is to ensure that we foster cross-disciplinary relationships. Therefore we will always try to pair you up with a mentee from outside your academic discipline. Often we get caught up in disciplinary approaches to teaching and learning and having exposure to different ways of thinking about teaching practices for both the mentor and mentee, can be a very valuable experience.

4. Independent development of portfolio or written claim (6-8 hrs)

How much time is spent on independent work is entirely down to each individual. However, our experience suggests that this is an average of 6-8 hours of work. During this phase, you are expected to think deeply about your practice, articulating not just what you have done, but why you did it and what you have learned in the process. You will be expected to drawn on examples of your own practice from within the last 3 years.

5. Final dialogue (up to 1 hr)

This is only for colleagues who choose to gain recognition via the dialogic route. In this professional dialogue you will spend up to one hour discussing your practice, with reference to your portfolio of evidence.
