Teaching and Learning
Our teaching and research are closely aligned; you can find out more information about what research our staff are involved in here.
Staff are great at making use of the latest technology in the classroom, and this means that we have been in a good position to adjust our teaching to online when we have been unable to meet our students on campus due to government guidance. For example in the 2020-21 academic year, staff have made good use of Padlet, a way of communicating and collaborating with students, Socrative or Mentimeter, online synchronous quiz technologies, pre-recorded video lectures, live online lectures and workshops.
Staff are always looking for new ways to engage students in their assessments. We make use of lots of different kinds of assessments on our programmes, so you will be assessed in a range of ways, from the traditional essay, to online quizzes, posters, blog postings, data analysis, project work, presentations and more. You can see some examples of student work here on our blog. We have made a particular effort to display work from our third year module, Reflections in Linguistics, where students are asked to bring together aspects of their programme that they might never have been explicitly taught, and applying these to their interests and/or experiences. Students have chosen some really fascinating projects from code-switching in children to diversity in the classroom to language and discrimination.
