Competence standards are defined within the Equality Act 2010 as:
‘ An academic, medical or other standard applied for the purposes of determining whether or not a person has a particular level of competence or ability.’ (Sch 13, para 4(3))
It is not necessary to make adjustments to a competence standard. However, you should carefully consider whether the standard is legitimate and appropriate and it what ways you could adjust the means by which you assess this competence.
For example, demonstrating the ability to think critically may be seen to be a legitimate requirement of an academic course of study in higher education but is it appropriate to only assess this by means of 3 hour written examinations?
ILTAF statement: Assessment of competence standards have been thoroughly considered to ensure inclusive assessment can be implemented.
