Introduction:
A short interview is an interview with a presenter and one or more interviewees who are asked questions on a topic they have knowledge and understanding on.
- 60 Seconds long
- You will need to consider and make reference to your choices related to the appropriate presentation of the interview, specifically in respect how it you decide to light it and why.
- You must choose a topic with broad appeal for which you must carry out a focused interview with an individual who is an authority/knowledgeable on the topic.
- You must use an animated graphic as an opener to the video to establish your ‘Newsbrand’ as well as onscreen titles to identify the contributor and their relevance.
Choosing our contributor:
With being York St John university students we wanted to create a piece that could be shown at the university. We decided a sport or society would be a good place to start and our interview could be informing other students on a specific sport or society and explaining more about it.
One of the members on my production is apart of the sport Ultimate frisbee, so we decided to invite the captain of the sport along who also happened to be the founder of the sport.
This gave us more questions to ask him as we were able to ask about what the sport it as well as how and why he decided to set it up in the first place.

500 word statements:
For my short interview, with graphics effect, I worked in a group of 3. In doing this we were all able to use the knowledge we had learnt to set up the lights in the correct way and share the roles of sound and camera operator between us. One member of the production team for this task was a part of the York St John sport ultimate Frisbee so we concluded to interview the captain of the sport who also happens to be the founder of it. With our contributor, also being a part of the university we could record this task on campus in a room that we booked out prior to the day of the task.
The majority of the equipment needed for this task, we had previously used and had a good understanding of how the equipment worked. This was apparent for the Canon 70D DSLR camera, as well as the sound kit which included the Tascam DR60 and the boom microphone used alongside the Tascam. The new equipment used for this task was the lighting kit also known as a dedo kit, which included enough equipment for 3 lights to be constructed and used in whichever way needed with filters to also be used to create effect. Due to using a dedo kit where the lights can become very hot, a risk assessment was completed. One of the health and safety risks was the lighting set as well as the electricity sockets that were being used to give power to the lights. In order to prevent any of the production crew from burning themselves on the lights, heat protective gloves were provided to be worn when handling the lights. As for the electricity sockets, they were all tested before using them to attach the lighting plugs by using a socket tester. Due to filming, within in a normal classroom, there was only one door exit to the room, so we had to make sure that exit and a pathway was kept clear in case of an emergency to prevent a health and safety risk.
This task helped us to gain knowledge and experience on how to use lighting within a production. During this task, we used 3-point lighting which includes a key, fill and back light (Mark Robertson, 2012). The key light is the primary light which ensures there is a bright light directly onto the contributor and is always illuminated. The fill light with help to lighten up the darker/ shaded side of the contributor and the back light adds the final dimension. The back light lights the background of the shot to prevent the contributor from blending into the background. (See image below) This is why I chose this task to present.
During the editing stage of this task, we had another task in adding graphic effects into the edit in order to establish our news brand as well as titles to identify the contributor. With our short interview being on a sport in York St John university we concluded our news brand should be linked to the university and created a news brand graphic effect with the university logo included. I used an existing template for to identify the contributor and edited it effectively for it to fit with the feel of my short interview using the colours of a blue for the title background and yellow for title text to create a trusting background with attention grabbing text (Sortable, 2015).
